Hi Malcolm,
I have a Pearl Quantz Intermediate. I am so impressed with the purity and resonance..... the flute just sings!
The tone allows so much expression. When I am in the higher octaves, it maintains purity. In the lower octaves it has the dept…
Hello all flautists! I have a jupiter flute which is fine, but I read that Pearl flutes enable the player to reach the 3rd octave easier because of the headjoint. Is this true? If so, what is it about the headjoint that makes the difference? ....

I have a question on head joints.....Will a different head joint help in playing 3rd octave easier? If so, what kind?
Hi! I'm about the same as you in terms of musical experience. I'm 47 and took up the flute about 2 and a half years ago. I'm planning on grade 3 soon, having passed grade 2 last year. I don't have a teacher at the moment, but never mind. I've looked…
Hi again.
I had a breakthrough thanks to keeping the embrochure relaxed and just working on the speed of the air flow. The notes sang clearly , though it's still a question of maintaining a lot of support from the diaphragm. All of the things I knew…
Thanks, guys!
I'm persevering, and each day seems a little bit of a better sound. The effort I'm putting into reaching those notes is getting me all tensed up, including embrochure. I'll give relaxing more of of a point of focus in my next scales se…

Thanks! I'm trying really hard, but I just it will come one day and then just feel normal after that. I remember when playing notes that are easy now were difficult. Oh well, here comes another day. I think I'll play this afternoon. Do you play at a particular time? I just play until I've had enough. I start with some scale and arpeggo exercises in a book I found and then a few difficult bars of a song I'm learning. Then I just kind of do what I want and try to play an easier song perfectly. well, I try. Do you have a toutine that you follow? I think I'm a bit disorganised and not at all disciplined. I play every day, though, not because it's a duty or anything, I just like it.
I draw and paint as well as my new found interest in the flute. Do you?
Malcolm
In order for me to get the higher notes out i have to make the airstream faster and make the hole of my mouth real small. It's the same with playing the piccolo. Don't try that yet. You need to get used to playing the flute before even attempting the piccolo. LOL. And yes, I absolutely LOVE Monet.
I was just kiddin. I found that paper with the tips. Here they are:
10.) have your flute in good working condition. Once a year send your flute to a reputable flute dealer/repair shop to have it cleaned oiled and adjusted. Don't try to fix it by yourself.
9.) Take care of your flute all year long. When putting it away and taking apart handle it by the tenons not the keys. This will prolong the life of the flute.
8.) Never get your flute wet. Water will only cause the inner workings of the flute to rust and cause the pads to become damaged.
7.) Practice! Practice daily. If you do not have any flute music, see if you can borrow some. There are tons of books out there - find one!
6.) Practice with a metronome. They can cost as little as $10 and can help you advance your musical skills by just turning them on.
5.) Learn your major scales. First learn one octave, then learn another. There are 12 major scales. make it your goal to memorize them all.
4.) Take some private lessons. If you can't afford the time or money to take regular lessons then just take a few. One-on-one instruction and help you advance faster than almost anything else.
3.) Be resourceful. Use the internet to look up flute-related topics. There is a world of info out there.
2.) Own the best flute that you can afford. A better instrument makes a big difference. Hand-cut embouchure holes, solid workmanship, and solid silver make the most difference.
1.) This was meant for around here. It says to ask Dr. Rea. She is the flute instructor at the college. I suppose that you can ask her questions also. stephanie.rea@murraystate.edu. I don't believe she would throw a fit if someone she didn't know asked her something. She doesn't actually know who we are anyway. I guess that this wouldn't be a top ten care list but it's actually called The Flute Student's Top 10. TTYL. TOODLES!!!!!!!
I will have to get back to you on the 10 care tips. I will have to find the paper. I think that I left it at school. LOL. I started playing the flute when I was in 6th grade. My mom played it when she was in school(for about a year) and she wanted me to have some musical education. That's how I got started. It has evolved greatly. I play in so many things now. I'm also getting ready to start taking lessons from a lady to help better prapare myself. I want to make it into the All -State band next year and most of her students have gone on to do that. I was really close this year to making the cut for the second round of auditions. I was one place away. UGH! I am also getting ready to start giving flute lessons to one of my directors kids. She is about 8. This should be fun!
hey, I am soooo excited. We just had some university teachers come in band today. They played wonderfully. I will give you the info on the top 10 flute care ideas if you'd like. Have you played in a school band or anything? I know it says that you haven't played with anybody yet. Just wondering. I am going to play with pep band tonight. G2G. Toodles!
hey, it says that you are online know. This talking to other people thing is kind of new to me on the computer. Can i help you with any problems. I've been playing for almost 6 years now and I play in a number of different things. Maybe I can help you.
Thanks, everybody for replying to my difficulty with playing flat. I think adjusting the tuning cork has had an effect as my c sharps sound fine in the pieces I've been playing all of a sudden. I'm not sure about the pitch of the whole thing yet as I havn't got a tuner and havn't seen the pianist recently. Happy new year and happy flute playing, everybody!
