I mainly play by note, and a little bit by ear. I wished I was better at playing by ear, because to me when you play buy ear it has more feeling to it. So yes I would do both. Best of luck to ya!!

I am currently playing an open-hole, but I really can't hear the diffence, so I don't know if it is just me or what. It did seem to help on better fingering placement though.
