i think people are misunderstanding you...
you mean, you dont count your rests and you wait for another part to que you in? I have that same problem. The easiest way is to force yourself to count the rests.

i have the same problem as you,play-by-ear is something good, this means that your ear are very sharp, but i think you need to spent some time in learning sight read and follow the sheet music closely
Don't break it. I play by note and I wished that I could play by ear better. To me when you play by ear the musci has more feeling in it. It's like the music comes alive and has more personalitiy.

Hi, Thanks for the upbeat comment. I appreciate it. Reading about you, you're an audio player -- playing by ear, and count yourself blessed. It will make you very able to improv with a band or ensemble. I can play by ear, but, because of years of rigorous (can you say straight jacket?) classical training, I'm glued to notes on a page way too much. Husband is an improv master who loves "cutting heads," and, well, you can imagine his frustration with me when I say to him, "Ah, honey, can I have some sheet music?" But, I too have to hear a piece in order to make sense of it. Most musicians do. That's why at university, there are the listening libraries. So, in fact, you're just right, a-okay, and "normal,"...if anyone who enjoys disturbing air molecules can be called "normal." :D
