Keeping it clean 9 Replies

I finally got a small chance to play my flute this week.  When I opened my case , I noticed the flute seemed extra tarnished. I had cleaned it not too long ago, and thought I had done a good job of…Continue

Light meters these days cost what a camera costs. I know it is hard to go digital but I think you would love it because you do use a computer. Maybe something like this would be perfect if you don't mind a recommendation (holiday special here), these are as good as pie Dick! Even made to not break if you drop it. What is your favorite flute song for Christmas? I like Chestnuts on an Open Fire, slow enough to sound good for me!

You see why I quit photography? A poke in the eye at every turn. + I don't usually have favorites of things, but I like most of the religious ones on Mannheim Steamroller CDs. I especially like God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen which I'm learning on the ukulele and Deck the Halls and The Drummer Boy (especially by MC).

Cin, go to about the third page of Comfort Flute. Look for Vinod's picture. The stuff about his flute and music is all there.

Hey, Cin, how's the guitar coming along? Did you have a lesson this week? I'm still battling the bar chords, but I'm gettin' better at it. I've also learned all the major, minor and VII chords (pretty much), and my singing range is growing. I'm still having some trouble (sometimes) with chord changes though. + Did you ever get the World Music for Flute book? I asked you the other day.

I'm struggling with the " pinkie" stretch. I have to stretch my fingers more so I can reach more easy.  Last week I learned how to play all the major scales using a simple pattern technique, and this week is the Dorian scale.  My husband complains I practice too much, so I have resorted to practicing in my car during my lunch break. If I park in the sunshine, it's not so bad. Men!!!!  and no I haven't gotten my flute book yet. I'm getting ready to yell at that man, too.

Hi, Cin, it's good you're making progress. What is the simple pattern technique for learning scales? You're learning the modes (Dorian) too? Sometimes I play in the bathroom; it's roomy and comfortable and the noise doesn't bother anyone. I mostly play by ear and standing up.

Hi Dick, the guitar lessons are worth all the money I pay to get simple and effective ways of learning. My teacher is pretty good at movtivating me and allows me to continue learning in my way or in a way that is interesting to me. Most guitar players are self taught and don't know how to read music, so everything is in shape ie chord shapes, and patterns ie scale runs. If you put your first finger where the root note is on the fret board, you can play a pattern and move it up and down the board to what ever key you would like to be in. I'm also learning the pentatonic scales. So interesting, and at the same time frustating, since I'm dealing with moving and stretching my fingers and coordinating my right hand at picking particular strings. But at least I don't have to worry about an embrouchure and air support.

Hi, Cin, have you started learning the Tabs yet? They're not as bad as I thought they would be, but maybe more difficult for the guitar. I don't know if I'm gonna bother using them or not. I'd really like to play it all by ear, but one would have to memorize the tune and the words and the chords etc. That all seems kinda daunting to me with my old man's memory. + My banjolele is a lot easier to fret than my soprano ukes, and it's really loud, but I like it. + Do yer fingers get sore? I have to rest mine every once in a while. But i'm glad i decided to take up the uke. + My singing range is improving too just like a friend said it would.

Yeh, Tabs are really different to read instead of the notes on a staff, but if you were not into reading music, then that would be the only way to know where to put a finger.  Yes, my finger tips now have good callus's built up.  My fingers don't get sore like before, but my left arm gets tired.  I have to stop when my brain gets over whelmed with over work. lol !

My fingers get sore when I play the banjolele, but they're ok after a rest. + Are you holding the guitar up with the left arm? I read where one holds the uke on his right thigh to free the left hand for fretting. One could hold it with his right elbow too. + It's stange, but my mind doesn't blank out with the uke as it does with the flute. Maybe the flute takes more concentration. I only play it twenty minutes now, then rest and hit it another twenty minutes. It works pretty good that way.
