Keeping it clean 9 Replies

I finally got a small chance to play my flute this week.  When I opened my case , I noticed the flute seemed extra tarnished. I had cleaned it not too long ago, and thought I had done a good job of…Continue

Does anyone in the FC do Pinterest or Words With Friends? Just wondering.

Today I wrote in my music journal: "I played well with good tone, but the music (Christmas carols) was boring, sterile. I think I need to speed up and add some improvisation." I guess we all have this problem from time to time. Maybe the music was too easy, too simple. Does anyone else ever get the music blahs?

Yup, all the time.  I always try to switch around the books, so I don't get bored. And I always try to learn something new.

You must be getting pretty good to complain " too easy, too simple".

Had a really cool guitar lesson yesterday.  Get to put on a capo next week---- ya baby!

Thanks, Cin, I switch books too, and I'm always learning new stuff. I'm certainly not "getting pretty good;" Christmas carols are easy, simple. + So what made yer lesson "cool"? I have a capo, but I haven't used it yet. + I played a lot last night, and I even transposed the tune that I was working on. My progress isn't smooth; it runs hot and cold. Last night I was struggling a bit, but I was transposing, and my singing was highly fair. + I guess the struggle makes it interesting. + How come you don't do yer Pinterest? I looked at yer page--all zeros. We have a good time with it.

What's Pinterest?  I have Words with Friends, my name Comdexy.  Send me a game --- you're on!

I learned some fingerings that allow me to " walk the bass" down. Fun stuff !

Dick, to keep from being bored, I do (like Cin) switch types of music.  But sometimes, I just revert to some of my favorites and try to play them "perfect" this time. (Never possible, always a challenge.) Or I play something I haven't played in a while.  Today I played Chopin, which I don't normally like all that much because it is simplistic in the melody line.  The whole thing about Chopin is in the "feeling" of the music, the emotion.  Hard to get without a whole orchestra, but the challenge of playing something simple but with emotion can get me out of my blahs. Too often we get caught up in the technical, playing the right notes in the right tempo, and sacrifice the feeling within the music. (Think Jack Nicholson playing that little Chopin piece on the piano up at the family home in "Five Easy Pieces.")  Some of Chopin's preludes would be good with your alto.  I also like Nocturne in F Major.

Hi, Donna, It's not so much that I was bored. It's the music that was boring. I'm a very slow natured person. I do almost everything slowly, and, when I'm working on stuff, I slow down even more. Then slowness becomes the norm. + Also, I tend to play tunes exactly as written, rather than try to spice them up. I have a good book on improvisation. I guess I should work on that. + It's funny; I whistle a lot (I'm trying to stop though), and I improvise then. I wish I could do as well with my instruments. Anyway, I guess I've got to work on speeding up and spicing up. + The other day I was playing 16th note scales and noticed a funny trait I have. I will play a scale or run and make mistakes, but when I play it a second time, I play it perfectly. I do that with the Bach Eb Sonata too. Well, that's a problem for a different day. Thanks for your help, I'll work on my blahs.

Hey all you flute returnees. There's an excellent article about you in the December 2012 issue of Flute Talk Magazine. It's "Back in the Flute Loop" by Craig Roberts. I enjoyed it. Get a hold of a copy and you will too.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.  We had kids at our house with lots of presents to open!  then we went to see " Life with Pi" movie --- one of the best I've seen --

I found some time to play some music this last week, since I got some time off from work.  Played some jazz standards with my flute , and my guitar playing is coming along.  Got into some Beatles music -- Paul's  love songs are my favorite.  I will try some transposing with my Capo this week and maybe start a R.E.M. song.  Mr. New Year , look out!
