For the summer, my parents want me to get a job somewhere, but with marching band and auditions and camps I have no time to hold down a steady job. Not to mention, none of the jobs left in town are very appealing jobs. So, I wanted to start giving private lessons on the side to make some extra money. I am very excited about getting this started, but I have no idea how to start! My home is very crowded and loud as there are seven people and two toddlers running around. Also, I have no idea how to find students to teach! If anyone has tips on how to begin private lessons, I would love to know about them because I have no idea where to start!

I started by talking to my music teacher and asking her for help finding some sudents. Mum also let people know that I was teaching flute. The word spread quite quickly. As for the noise problem, I'm not quite sure how you would be able to fix that. I hope this is helpful.
I must ask if if you made any money off of this... I might consider this myself since I am in the same situation. I could teach people basic music theory and flute... Did you find anyone? What was the response like?
You can ask your marching band teacher some music teacher what will you need and they will tell you . But you might have somebody , that don't play the flute so I would also try to take private lessons on differnt insterments . Then you can have differnt insterments prices . You might have somebody that don't have a flute yet so will have too let them use yours so i'll go to a band store and get wipes so you can wipe it off .
Dear Shaina,

As a flute teacher I have to tell you, that it is a bit dangerous plan to teach if you don't have the education for it. For all the beginnings and how to hold the flute correctly are not so easy to learn and to explain. Till summer you have enough time, so I would like to advise, that you buy a book for flute teachers or a good flute school with lot of explanations and learn the basics again as a "teacher". You can please somebody from your family to make a lesson with you and than look, how it works. Speak also with your teacher and ask him/her for tips.
If you don't have a quiet room at home you can make an offer to go home to your pupils. For the most of them surely a very practical solution.
Kids don't want to hear lot of instructions, so show them how to hold the flute and make the embouchure and play more. Adults would like to understand everything also about the instrument and history. You can give them copies to read and to speak about the next time.
The get pupils you can make flyers with your number and E-mail and a short presentation about you. A nice photo from you with your flute can help. Lay the flyers in schools, supermarkets, post, movie house...everywhere you can.
If you don't have a diploma make a low prize. If you get lot of pupils you can still earn good money.
So I hope there is something will help you.
Wish you success!!!

greetings from Salzburg Gerda
Thank for all of your advice everyone!

This post is a bit old, I almost forgot about it! I ended up being able to teach in my home and now have 8 students since September if 2009. I charge $18 per hour and even teach a few students for free for community service hours. So to answer your question Chris, it is going really well :)

My students are in 5th through 10th grade and they are all so dedicated to playing the flute and great to work with! Not to mention, I have learned so much just by teaching others, the experience is pricesless.

Gerda, I haven't found it too difficult to teach so far without a degree. I am only 17, which makes it much easier to relate to younger players, I sometimes teach the way that I learn and other times teach the way I've seen others teach, it just depends on the person. I definitely plan on teaching a wider range of kids after I start and finish college though!

Thanks again for all the help everyone, you really helped me get going :)
