Flutist Connect

an online community for flutists.

Hi all, I'm new here and I need some advice. I've looked over the different forums here and can't find a specific place to go for help so I'm here. If I need to be in another forum PLEASE let me know. My wife and I have recently acquired our three oldest grandchildren because their parents are no longer with us. Their ages are 14, 15 & 17. There are two boys and one girl. The girl, Olisha, is the 14 year old. She is a freshman in high school this year and she plays flute in the school band, she has been playing since the 6th grade and loves it. She is borrowing a flute from the school right now because her flute got broken and her parents didn't get a chance to have it repaired or replaced. My wife and I would LOVE to get her a flute of her own. She plays an Armstrong Open Hole B foot flute now and loves it so we are looking for the same. Not neccessarily an Armstrong but a GOOD used Open Hole B foot flute that she will like and be able to use through high school. I don't know very much at all about flutes BUT I do know enough about musical instruments to stay away from the cheap "Chinese" stuff. I've been a drummer & guitarist for about 40+ years. As you can suspect we don't have much of a budget since we are having to finish raising these three grandkids. And let me tell you it's a CHALLENGE!! We haven't had kids living in our house for about 20 yrears. Anyway, if you could give me some advice and help I would TRULLY appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help, Ron H.

I'd say this was the forum for your question, but I noticed you've also asked it in a different forum.

In case the reply you have over there gets lost, Here is a link to it (just click on the highlighted word Here).

I am new to Flutist Connect and saw your inquiry. I've been teaching and playing for over 30 years and have tried all kinds of flutes. Have you tried Di Zhao Flutes? I couldn't help but notice your exclamation about cheap "Chinese" stuff, but not everything is cheap from China. Most flutes now are made in China. Armstrong I believe is made there now also. Although Di Zhao flutes are assembled in China, the head joints are hand carved in Boston by Di Zhao and they are hand finished also here in the United States. Di Zhao is probably the most renowned flute maker in the industry today. Having worked as Powell's master flute maker and Vice President of Quality, and then Vice President of Manufacturing for Wm. S. Haynes, he comes with outstanding credentials.

I wouldn't call Di Zhao's flutes cheap (but you might think so from the price), but I would call them extremely affordable. Visit www.thefluteloft.com. There you will find detailed descriptions for each model flute, prices, sound bytes, and testimonials.

I personally own these instruments and LOVE them.  Many members of my professional flute ensemble Flutatious (www.flutatious.org) also own Di Zhao Flutes.

I hope this information is helpful.
